Abbott, Frank Frost & Allan Chester Johnson.Municipal Administration In The Roman Empire. $90.00
Octavo. vii p., 2 l., 3-598, [1] p. Princeton, Princeton University Press, 1926
More than half of the six hundred pages of this volume is devoted to original documents in Latin & Greek, numbered, listed and indexed. Of fifteen chapters seven were written by Professor Abbott. Roughly speaking the later period of the Empire and the eastern parts have fallen to the share of Professor Johnson…. [The book] is a model of scholarly diligence, organization and collaboration, which will introduce specialists to all the literature bearing upon the subject to date, and will also constitute a dependable source of information for workers in allied fields. The volume takes its place at once as an outstanding monument of American classical scholarship.” N.W. deWitt, Review Article, Classical Philology > Vol. 22, No. 4 (Oct., 1927), pp. 440-441.

Adams’ bibliography remains
one of the most important books in the field and one of the basic works of
bibliography for antiquarian bookselling. Adams provides collations for every
title described. There are approximately 45,000 printed books in the catalogue,
all of which are expertly collated by Adams and his staff. Adams also adds two
useful indexes of printers. Under each printer is provided the place of work
followed by a list of the books they printed or published arranged in
chronological order, and then a list of names of any with or for whom they
worked. The second index gives the places where printing took place, arranged
alphabetically, with the names of those who worked there, also alphabetically,
with the limiting dates of their output as represented in this catalogue.

acknowledgement…Mr. John Bartlett of Boston, whose admirable catalogue,
recently issued [1882. 1st ed.], of his own valuable collection, forms a choice

Alliot, Hector. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ARIZONA. $75.
Octavo. 432 pages. Los Angeles: The Southwest Museum,
1914. ISBN 1-57898-185-9.
This is an expanded edition of the bibliography of
Arizona books compiled in 1900 by J.A. Monk and revised in 1908. The collection
was based on the books collected by Dr. Munk and donated to the Southwest
Museum, where Alliot was curator. The bibliography is, in fact, a complete
record to date of the Munk Library of Arizoniana, the pioneer collection of
literature dealing with the State of Arizona. This catalogue is thus the third
edition of the original catalogue issued by Dr. Munk in 1900 and 1908. In all the 5750 books are cited. None of the
editions have been available before in reprint. Besterman 510.
Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp.iii-cxxxi.988. Madrid: Imprenta Y Funicion de Manuel Tello, 1876
This very scarce bibliography
covers every aspect of Spanish military history from ancient times to date
of publication. Topics include ancient Greece, Rome, barbarian invasions,
Africa, Arab invasions, Arabs in Spain, the reconquest of Spain, The Holy
Roman Empire and dozens of other subjects.
The arrangement of material is by author, and more that 17,500 items are described.
Almirante's bibliography is by far the most extensive book on the subject
according to Besterman. Never reprinted, this is a very difficult bibliography
to find. We could find no copies on the internet and no reprint appears to
have been published previously. Besterman 3939.

The New Conquest of Central Asia; A Narrative Of The Explorations of the Central Asiatic Expeditions in Mongolia And China, 1921-1930, by Roy Chapman Andrews. $225.00
Hardbound. Large Quarto. L, 678 p. col. front., With 128 plates and 12 illustrations in the text and three maps at end. New York, The American Museum of Natural History, 1932.
This bulky volume presents in narrative form the adventures, travels, and discoveries of the largest and most highly organized land expeditions which have ever embarked from the United States of America. It covers ten years of work and five seasons in the field. The cost was over 600,000 dollars and the European staff comprised thirty-four experts, of whom five were topographers. The value of this book is not strictly geographical. Notes on zoology, palaeontology, and topography are scattered throughout the book, together forming a fine picture of the whole object and results of the expedition. The difficulties of the topographers are well exemplified by the account (p. 293) of the survey of a mirage with its lake and hills, in the belief that it was in fact what it looked like. Part I deals with the Mongolian Expeditions in which a fleet of Dodge cars take a leading place and without which such great distances could never have been traversedin the time. But perhaps the outstanding feature of the book is the impor tance and success of correlated scientific work in the field. Its value is amply proved. Zoology, botany, palaeontology, and topography were all brought into contact overa single specimen, and for that Dr. Andrews must take full credit. The genesis of the expeditions dates from Professor Osborn's prediction in 1900 that Asia would prove to have been a great dispersal centre of northern terrestrial mammalian life, and the remarkable fossil discoveries appear to have amply justified the contention. The discovery of the Baluchitherium (pp. 138 et seq.), of the Shovel-toothed Mastodon (Platybelodon), together with a fossil foetus (p. 144), and of some fifty eggsof more than one species of Dinosaur at the now famous Flaming Cliffs of Shabarakh Usu, are among the most sensational and are of world-wide interest. The whole of those ten years' work have been a marvelous triumph of organization, inspired by Professor Osborn and carried out by Dr. Andrews and his staff. The work is profusely illustrated with excellent photographs, and there is a good index.

This very hard to find bibliography is the standard
work on books relating to Hungary. AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, or the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy is the official name of a territory situated in central Europe,
bounded E. by Russia and Rumania, S. by Rumania, Servia, Turkey and Montenegro,
W. by the Adriatic Sea, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the German
empire, and N. by the German empire and Russia. It occupied about the sixteenth
part of the total area of Europe, with an area (1905) of 239,977 sq. miles.
Apponyi’s work is divided into four volumes. Volume I covers works from 1470-1600. Volume II covers the period from 1601-1720. Volume III covers additional material from the Fifteenth and
Sixteenth centuries. Volume IV covers additional material from 1601-1795. In
all 2506 printed items are described in meticulous detail. The original volumes were printed in
additions of only 125 to 300 copies per volume, making complete sets very
difficult to find.
