Bentley, G.E. Jr.  BLAKE BOOKS. $135.

Cloth, Octavo.  xii, 1079pp.  Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1977.

In Blake Books, Professor Bentley has revised and considerably expanded A Blake Bibliography (1964) by G.E. Bentley Jr., and M.K. Nurmi, so that the second edition is virtually a new work some three times the length of the first.  Many of the entries in this work have been revised, including an entire section on Blake’s commercial engravings, and hundreds of new biographical and critical works have been rewritten and brought up to date. The largest addition is the census, history and description of every copy of each of Blake’s literary works, in manuscript or in print examined from Auckland to Edinburgh. Blake Books is thus both a descriptive bibliography of works by Blake and an annotated checklist of all printed references to him (1757-1863) our edition includes new preface and addendum done expecilly for theis edition by G.E. Bentley and all significant works about him (1863-1973). Copies of the original edition are not easy to find. Second hand copies sell for approximately $250.  Over 3000 items are meticulously described.  Includes a new preface and postscript by G.E. Bentley. Published by Arrangement with Oxford University Press.

Bentley, Harry C. & Ruth S. Leonard. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WORKS ON ACCOUNTING BY AMERICAN AUTHORS. $95.00

Oversized octavo.  Two volumes bound in one.  197; 408 pages.  Harry C Bentley;  Ruth S Leonard; Boston,

The present work s a complete bibliography of works on accounting by American authors which were copyrighted prior to 1901.  It may be called a 19th century bibliography because, with the exception of two works by Mitchell and Cobb, it is restricted to works published during the one hundred years before 1900.
The distinction of being the pioneer American authority falls to William Mitchell, and his work heads the list of titles.  These are the only two authors to have published in the 18th century in the United States.
The second volume was published in 1935 and covers books printed from 1901 to the date of publication.
A standard work in the field.  Besterman 121 Cites 1500 works for this bibliography.  Each listing provides full title, author, place of publication, date, pagination and frequently an annotation.

Berghman, Gustaf Schlegel. CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ DES IMPRESSIONS ELZEVIRIENNES.  $80.

Cloth. Octavo. xxxii.391. Paris & Stockholm: Nordiska Bokhandeln & Honoré Champion, 1911.

The name of Elzevier is a famous one in the history of Dutch printing and publishing.  Between its foundation in 1585 and its close in 1712, the House of Elzevier issued over 1600 separate works.  Most of these were in Latin, and comprised editions of the classics, theology, history and medicine, though there were also a number of French dramatic and literary works, and several books written by contemporary European scholars.  The Elzeviers were first class publishers and through their influence they exercised a considerable influence upon contemporary scholarship. Berghman’s scarce catalogue of the works of the Elzevier Press is more comprehensive than even Willems’ famous bibliography.  Willems describes 2186 printed books, Berghman 2340.  Berghman also provides very useful annotations and descriptions.  The bibliography is quite scarce.  To the best of our knowledge the title has not previously been available in reprint.  Besterman 5168.

Bernoni, Domenica. DEI TORRESANI, BLADO E RAGAZZONI CELEBRI STAMPATORI A VENEZIA EROMA NEL XV EXVI SECOLO; COGLI ELENCHI ANNOTATI DELLE RISPETTIVE EDIZIONI. $75.

Cloth. Octavo. viii.403.  Milano: Hoepli, 1890.

Andrea Torresano (1451-1529) is an important figure in the history of printing, and an associate of Aldus Manutius.  When the latter came to Venice, the centre of the publishing industry, he became partners with Torresano, who was already an established printer. Andrea provided the expertise and material resources to the new company formed by the two printers.  There were quite a few printers in the Torresano. Besides Andrea there was Francesco, Federico, Gerolamo, Andrea Jr, and Bernardo.  In all the family produced 430 works. Antonio Blado, the greatest printer at Rome in the sixteenth century, is well known for his italic type acquired by Arrighi. Blado’s larger italic is Arrighi’s second font. Blado is perhaps most famous for his first editions of Machiavelli’s works printed at Rome in 1531 and 1532. In all Blado and his successors produced 323 works described by Bernoni. Bernoni also describes 16 works by Ragazzoni.  In all 769 works are described.  Besterman 5149.

Black, George F. Compiled by. ETHIOPICA & AMHARICA: A LIST OF WORKS IN THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LYBRARY. $45.

Cloth. Octavo.  vi. 87.  New York:  New York Public Library, 1928

The attention of European scholars was first drawn to the Ethiopic language in 1513 when Potken published in Rome his edition of the Psalter.  This, the first book printed in Europe in the Ethiopic language and character, contains, in addition to the Psalter, the Song of Solomon and certain Biblical hymns and prayers. The editio princeps of the Ethiopic New Testament, in two volumes, Rome, 1548-1549, was the next major printing landmark.  Four years later appeared the Chaldeae sev Aethiopicae linguae institutions by Marianus Victorius, Rome 1552 [reprinted in 1630], the first grammar of the language published.  Our first accurate knowledge of the Ethiopic is due to the labors of the distinguished scholar Hiob Ludolf, whose lexicon and grammar laid the foundation of the scientific study of the language. These, and other landmark books in the literary history of the region, are cited in this useful bibliography.  In all approximately 1400 works on the subject are cited, with occasional annotations.
