Dibdin, Thomas Frognall.  AN INTRODUCTION TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF RARE & VALUABLE EDITIONS OF THE GREEK & ROMAN CLASSICS.   $125.

Hardbound. Cloth. Octavo.  Two volumes bound in one. iv.xiii.562+ iv.580pp. London: Harding & Lepard, 1827.

Dibden's intent in this bibliography was to produce a manual, or a guide that would constitute a "Vade Mecum" for collectors.  The first edition was a slim 64 pages.  The fourth and best edition we reprint has bloated to nearly 1200 pages describing 3500 editions of the classics. Also included is an account of Polyglot bibles, Polyglot Psalters, Hebrew Bibles, Greek Bibles and Greek Testaments; the Greek Fathers and the Latin Fathers. This bibliography remains a landmark work in the history of book collecting.  The annotations are long and useful.  There are valuable cross-references to other works.  The arrangement of the work is alphabetical by author, then chronological by date of publication. Besterman 1374.

di San Filippo, Pietro Amat. BIOGRAFIA DEI VIAGGIATORI ITALIANI. COLLA BIBLIOGRAFIA DELLE LORO OPERE.    $145.

8vo. 3 vols. In 1. 742, 85, 325 pp. Rome, 1882-84.  ISBN 1-888262-20-6.

This still unsurpassed work contains 717 chronologically arranged entries for Italian explorers and covers the period 1120-1881. The definitive edition, with indexes and appendices. It includes, importantly, Amat & Uzielli's studies of the maps of Italian exploration from the 13th-17th centuries. Because of its rarity, this work has yet to be as appreciated as it deserves. Besterman 6464 & 1153.

Dolch, Walter. BIBLIOGRAPHIE der Österreichischen Drucke des XV. und XVI. Jahrhunderts. $60.00

Langer, Eduard, 1852-1914.
Dolch, Walther,; 1883-1914.
Schwarz, Ignaz,;1867-1925.

Cloth. Octavo viii.172. Illustrated. Vienna: Verlag Von Gilhofer & Ranschburg, 1913.
Conceived as a long-term project encompassing several volumes, this bibliography was undertaken with the object of producing the definitive catalogue of Austrian printing during this period. Regrettably, only this volume was produced. No doubt the war cut short the effort. Dolch's work, under the general editorship of Eduard Langer, remains a standwork work in the field. 200 incunables from Trient, Vienna and Schrattenthal are very meticulously described. There are extensive notes, very detailed descriptions and cross references to the standard works. Short introductory essays describe the first books from each printer, and there is a useful index at the end. This standard work is hard to find, and has not been reprinted. Besterman 5084.

Drake-Brockman. British Somaliland. $75.00

Octavo. English. xvi, 334 p. : incl. illus., geneal. tables, diagrs. plates (1 fold.) port., fold. map. London : Hurst & Blackett, Ltd., 1912 . This book, by the medical officer of the Somaliland Protectorate, is mainly an account of the Somali people, and is the result of ten years' acquaintance with that race. The flora and fauna and the economic resources of the countryare also considered. Of equal interest are the opening chapters. They contain an historical summary, and give the best description we have of Zeila, Berbera, and the other ports. Indeed, though no systematic topographical survey of the protectorate is attempted by the author, the attentive reader will not close the book without having gained an accurate knowledge of its leading characteristics. There is considerable treatment of the history of the region, and its trade. The student of historical geography will find several helpful suggestions regarding its inhabitants, civilization, and trade. The Somali themselves arc considered at some length. There are many very fine photographs and a good sketch-map.
