Eberstadt, Edward.   EBERSTADT’S  TEXAS  CATALOGUE.  $55.

Cloth. Octavo.xiv.220 pages. New York: Edward Eberstadt & Sons, 1963. ISBN 1-57898-166-2.

Edward Eberstadt and Sons was perhaps the most prominent Americana Firm of its era. The firm acquired very important Americana items and presented them to their customers in handsomely produced and extensively annotated catalogues. Many of these catalogues have become reference works in their own right. The extensive scholarship that went into the catalogue description is still of use today. Eberstsadt’s Catalogue 162 is devoted entirely to Texas material. Nine hundred and fifty important books and manuscripts on Texas are offered for sale and expertly described. The catalogue itself has become a standard work in the field, being cited in Jenkins as a basic Texas book. The Eberstadt Texas Catalogue also includes an introduction by Archibald Hanna.

Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp. viii, 968 columns. London, British Museum, 1922.
The British Museum [Now British Library] collection of Persian books is very extensive. The preface claims that this is the first work of its kind, for no detailed catalogue of any large collection of Persian printed books had hitherto been published. The works included in this catalogue are firstly books in the Persian language, secondly translations of Persian books in European languages, and thirdly bibliographies and writings on Persian literature. The bibliography also describes all copies of Fitzgerald's Umar Khayyam, in the British Museum. It also describes whether the editions are illustrated. The bibliography includes a general index of titles, and subject index, with the classification in the latter. 6000 printed items are described. Besterman 4760. Very scarce catalogue. No copies were found on the internet at the time of publication.

Quarto, 191pp. Charlottsville, University Press of Virginia 1971

The publication in 1970 of the Supplement to Evans’ American Bibliography made it necessary to issue an index to that volume.  This volume is the result.  It covers the 11,000 items described in the Supplement.  The first section of this index includes authors and titles in a single alphabet.  Among authors have been included all pseudonyms and all attributed authors, whether or not revealed on the title page.

Evans (Bristol, Roger Pattrell).  SUPPLEMENT TO CHARLES EVANS’ AMERICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY.  $25.

Charlottesville:  University Press of Virginia, 1970, 636pp.

No bibliography is ever complete or finally finished, and the American Bibliography of Charles Evans is no exception.  He produced a fair number of bibliographical ghosts, or nonexistent books.  Many of his entries, for other reasons, are inaccurate as to author, title, imprint or collation and require revision or correction.  The work to revise and update Evans continued until 1969.  The final results reveal that this important supplement includes more than 11,200 entries that escaped the notice of both Evans and Shipton. This represents an increase of nearly 30% above the Evans-Shipton total of 39,162.
