Italy had a particular interest in Ethiopia. Like most European powers in the late 19th century, Italy was determined to secure territories in Africa. Italy was focusing its desires particularly on Ethiopia. The Treaty of Uccialli was negotiated between Ethiopia and Italy in 1890. Two copies, one in Amharic and one in Italian, were prepared. On the Italian version of the treaty, Francesco Crispi, prime minister of Italy, announced to all European nations that Ethiopia had become a territory belonging to Italy. On the Amharic version, the treaty gave Menelik II the right to ask Italy for help in times of need, but it didn't say anything about Ethiopia becoming a territory of Italy. When Menelik II discovered the misunderstanding, he immediately wrote to Britain's Queen Victoria, to the ruler of Germany, and to the president of France insisting that Ethiopia was still an independent nation. In 1893, Menelik II denounced the treaty and by 1895 Ethiopia and Italy were at war. On March 1896 Menelik's troops crushed the Italian army at Adwa, Ethiopia. Later, Italy did recognize Ethiopia as an independent nation. Besterman 2067.

Furchheim, Friedrich. BIBLIOGRAPHIE DER INSEL CAPRI. $60.

Cloth. Octavo. pp.vii.176. Leipzig: Otto Harrassowitz, 1916

Part of the territory of Neapolis [Ancient Naples], Capri was a political dependent of the city until the arrival of Octavian - the future Emperor Augustus. Strabo recounts that in the years following the battle of Actium (31 BC), Octavian was so enchanted with Capri that he gave the Neapolitans the island of Ischia in exchange for his favorite island, making this latter his private property and beginning large-scale building work.
However, although the island of Capri remained the Emperor's favorite destination until his death in 14 AD, it never became his home.
With the death of Tiberius (37 AD), the ancient historians lost interest in Capri, even though the island continued to be home to imposing aristocratic villas for the whole of the 1st century AD. As from the beginning of the 2nd century AD, news of the island became rare with the only event of major importance being the exile to Capri of the wife and sister (Crispina and Lucilla, respectively) of Emperor Commodus in 182 AD.
The 3rd century AD was a dark period for Capri, characterized by a considerable fall in the standard of living of the island community and notable social and cultural transformation (especially the slow spread of Christianity).
Despite having fallen to ruin following centuries of neglect and plundering, the island's monuments began to become an important tourist attraction in the 18th century. In fact, Capri's success as a tourist resort began with the acknowledgement and enhancement of its ancient monuments.
Furchheim's work is a standard work on the subject in the best [Second & Revised] edition of 1916. In all 1500 works are described. Besterman 1135.
