Gardiner, Alan H. NOTES ON THE STORY OF SINUHE. $75
Tall Octavo.English  Book 193 p. plates. Paris, Librairie Honoré Champion,  1916

The Tale of Sinuhe is a work of Ancient Egyptian literature. It is a narrative set in the aftermath of the death of Pharaoh Amenemhat I, founder of the 12th dynasty of Egypt, in the early 20th century BC. It is likely that it was composed only shortly after this date, albeit the earliest extant manuscript is from the reign of Amenemhat III, c. 1800 BC. There is an ongoing debate among Egyptologists as to whether or not the tale is based on actual events involving an individual named Sinuhe, with the recent consensus being that it is most likely a work of fiction.

The tale is often considered the supreme achievement of Ancient Egyptian literature. It combines into a single, economically expressed narrative an extraordinary range of literary styles, and is also notable for its nuanced examination of the motivations of its central protagonist. The poem continually examines the reasons for Sinuhe's flight and his possible culpability for it, without reaching a conclusion.  By placing an Egyptian character in a non-Egyptian (i.e. Asiatic) society, the poem also explores the nature of what it is to be an Egyptian, subtly questioning, without ultimately undermining the Egyptian assumption that life outside Egypt is meaningless.

Gardiner’s 1916 is still an important text on the subject.

Gass, Patrick. GASS'S JOURNAL OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION. $45.

Linen Cloth, Octavo. 298pp. Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1904

Martino Fine Books is pleased announce this second title in the Lone Wolf Series. Excepting Lewis & Clark and Sacajawea, Patrick Gass is better known than any other member of the Corps of Discovery. There are several reasons for this. By virtue of his being sergeant during the expedition, his name crops up with greater frequency in the journals of Lewis and Clark than that of most others. He was the first of the journalists to publish his account, so that he early came to the attention of readers. He was the first member of the party to have a biography written about him. And, in the matter of longevity, he far outstripped all others. Our edition is a reprint of the 1904 publication by A.C. McClurg & Co. The edition was under the editorship of James K. Hosmer. The new 1904 is a reprint of 1811 edition but adds an introduction and index by Hosmer. The original 1904 edition of Gass's Journal has become has become collectible in its own right, selling for as much as $450.
For the Lone Wolf edition we have rescreened the illustrations, and printed the book on high quality natural paper. All reprints will be smyth-sewn. Only linen cloth will be used for bindings. All books in this series will be limited to 500 copies or less.

Gelli, Jacopo. BIBLIOGRAFIA GENERALE DELLA SCHERMA: CON NOTE CRITICHE, BIOGRAFICHE E STORICHE. $95.00

Oversized Octavo. Book xliii, 599 [1] p. front., ports.  Milano, Hoepli, 1895.

As suggested by the continuing power of the myths of swordfighting knights and adventurers, the fencing tradition is rich and storied. Like fellow Olympic sports archery and javelin, fencing has its roots in ancient combat. Around 1200 BC, the Egyptians began the custom of fencing for sport, as seen by images in decorative reliefs from that period depicting knobs on the end of weapons, earflaps and other protective garb. Sword craftsmanship evolved through the ages, from the short, wide swords favored by the Greeks

and Romans to the heavy two-handed broadswords in vogue during the age of chivalry. After the advent of gunpowder and firearms, armor became obsolete and lighter swords gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for European officers and gentlemen. The Italians, Spanish, and French all claim parentage for modern fencing, but throughout Europe during the Renaissance the discipline took on the aura of high art, with masters refining and passing on to a select few their secret techniques. In the 18th century, treatises appeared in print setting forth the current system of rules and scoring, and prescribing the foil, a metal mask with eye slit, and protective jacket or vest as equipment for use. The rules were intended to simulate real combat while protecting the safety of the combatants. "Conventions" were subsequently adopted to limit the target area of the body and providing for a "right of way" for attacks. This is the second edition, much expanded and more rare than the original edition of 1890. Besterman  2139 citing 2000 titles.

Gosch, C. C. A; James Hall; John Gatonbe; William Baffin; Miller Christy; Jens Munk. DANISH ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS, 1605 To 1620. In Two Books. $ 110.00

Hardbound .Octavo. English Two Volumes bound in one. 2 folded pl., 14 maps (some folded) London : Printed for the Hakluyt Society, Hakluyt Society, No. xcvii (London, 1897). Gosch edits and annotates two important works in the early search for a North West Passage. The first work is a scholarly edition of James Hall's accounts of the Danish Expeditions to Greenland in 1605, 1606 and 1607, to which is added Hall's voyage to Greenland in 1612. James Hall, arctic pilot and navigator, participated in three expeditions to Greenland in Danish service and led a fourth expedition in English Service. Hall's report to the King of Denmark on the Voyage of 1605 was accompanied by four maps, results of the earliest attempt to map the west coast of Greenland. This report and others published by Purchas formed a valuable source of knowledge about Greenland which England used to greater advantage than did Denmark. The second work is Jens Munk's Expedition to Hudson's Bay in Search of a North-West Passage in 1619-1620. Jens Munk (1579-1628) was a Danish navigator, born near Arendal, Norway. In 1619, under the auspices of King Christian IV, he set out with two ships to discover the Northwest Passage to the Indies and China. He penetrated Davis Strait as far north as 69° and then turned southward and spent the winter on Churchill River. Cold, famine, and scurvydestroyed so many of his men that only two persons besides himself survived. With these he sailed for home, reaching Bergen, Norway, in September, 1620. Just when ready to start on a new Northwest Passage journey to take possession of "New Denmark" for the Danish crown he died. An account of his first voyage was published at Copenhagen in 1623 as Efterretning af Navigationen og Reisen til det Nye Danmark af Styrmand Jens Munk, new edition by Peter Lauridsen (Copenhagen, 1883.Hakluyt Society,No. xcvii (London, 1897). Cloth. pp.[iii].iv.176. Leipzig: W. Englemann, 1843.
The basis for "magic" was realized, the very moment when humans discovered and recognized the thought processes needed to accomplish an act of deception or trickery. Exactly when this occurred is unknown. The definition of "magic" by todays standards (according to Webster) is: Mag·ic \'maj-ik\ n. 1) The art of persons who claim to be able to do things by the help of supernatural reatures or by their own knowledge of ature's secrets. 2) Something that charms; any seemingly hidden or secret power; as, the magic of a voice; the magic of a great name. 3) Sleight of hand. -adj. 1) Of or having to do with magic. 2) Seemingly requiring more than human power; startling in performance; producing effects which seem supernatural; as, magic skill. 3) Having the powers or effects of magic; as, a magic land or scene.
Whatever the definition, the bibliographical study of books on magic is not extensive. Besterman lists only four works under "magic," Graesse's being the most extensive by far. In all 3000 published items are identified. Besterman 3653.

Grandidier, Guillaume. BIBLIOGRAPHIE DE MADAGASCAR 1500-1903. $110.00

Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp.viii.433 + [iii]. 435-905. Two parts in one volume. Paris: Comite de Madagascar, 1905-1906
The written history of Madagascar began in the seventh century A.D., when Arabs established trading posts along the northwest coast. European contact began in the 1500s, when Portuguese sea captain Diego Dias sighted the island after his ship became separated from a fleet bound for India.
In the late 17th century, the French established trading posts along the east coast. From about 1774 to 1824, it was a favorite haunt for pirates, including Americans, one of whom brought Malagasy rice to South Carolina.
Beginning in the 1790s, Merina rulers succeeded in establishing hegemony over the major part of the island, including the coast. In 1817, the Merina ruler and the British governor of Mauritius concluded a treaty abolishing the slave trade, which had been important in Madagascar's economy. In return, the island received British military and financial assistance. British influence remained strong for several decades, during which the Merina court was converted to Anglicanism and Congregationalism. The British accepted the imposition of a French protectorate over Madagascar in 1885 in return for eventual control over Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) and as part of an overall definition of spheres of influence in the area. Absolute French control over Madagascar was established by military force in 1895-96, and the Merina monarchy was abolished. Grandidier's bibliography is the most extension bibliography on the subject in Besterman. In all 7402 bibliographical references are cited. Please note we reprint only the first volume containing works from 1500-1905, and not later supplements that added newly published material. Besterman 3645.

Granniss, Ruth S./Grolier Club Librarian. A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE FIRST EDITIONS IN BOOK FORM OF THE WRITINGS OF PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY. $65.
Cloth. Octavo. pp.xxx.134. Illustrated. New York : The Grolier Club 1923.
Shelley was one of the most famous English Romantic poets whose passionate search for personal love and social justice was gradually channeled from overt actions into poems that rank with the greatest in the English language. Shelley was the heir to rich estates acquired by his grandfather. Most of Shelley's poetry reveals his philosophy, a combination of belief in the power of human love and reason, and faith in the perfectibility and ultimate progress of man. His lyric poems are superb in their beauty, grandeur, and mastery of language. Although Matthew Arnold labeled him an ineffectual angel, 20th-century critics have taken Shelley seriously, recognizing his wit, his gifts as a satirist, and his influence as a social and political thinker.
In 1922 the Grolier Club, in common with many societies, universities and libraries, held an exhibition of the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Percy Bysshe Shelley. The scope of this work includes descriptions of all the writings of Shelley that were published during his lifetime. In all 150 works are meticulously described, with very useful and extensive notes. Only 350 copies of the original were published. Besterman 5735

Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp. 311 p. illus. 22 cm. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, Great Britian, 1952

"This book sets out to show that Goethe was profoundly influenced throughout his life by the religious and philosophical beliefs he derived from his early study of alchemy. Alchemy can be interpreted in many ways…. As Goethe knew it, it was primarily concerned with mysticism. In his hands, however, it underwent some transformation: the mystical aspect became less important, while he attempted to provide more logical, more scientific evidence of the symbolical truth of alchemy." [From the preface]
Gray's work remains a standard work on this important aspect of Goethe's thinking. This title has not before been available in reprint. Second hand copies are hard to find and sell for as much as $200. We found only one copy for sale on the internet. Published by arrangement with Cambridge University Press.

Cloth. Octavo. Two parts in one. Xxxv.297 + viii. xxxvii- lvii.267-593. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1922 & 1927.
Alexander Pope [1688-1744], English poet and Satirist, was the greatest poet and verse satirist of the Augustan period. Pope inherited from John Dryden the verse form that he chose to perfect. He polished his work with meticulous care and, like all great poets, used language with genuine inventiveness. His qualities of imagination are seen in the originality with which he handled traditional forms, in his satiric vision of the contemporary world, and in his inspired use of classical modes.
Pope not only wrote poems, he translated Homer, and edited several important editions.Griffith's bibliography is arranged in two parts. Volume one, part one, includes Pope's own writings, 1709-1734. Volume One, part two includes Pope's own writings, 1735-1751. In all, 700 works are described in chronological order. Griffith discusses points, variants and states, and provides very useful annotations. This work remains the standard work to this day. Besterman 4961
