Hebard, Grace Raymond. SACAJAWEA A GUIDE AND INTERPRETER OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION.$45.

Linen Cloth, Octavo. 340 pp. Glendale, California: Arthur H. Clark, 1933

Martino Fine Books is pleased to announce a new division and a new imprint. Lone Wolf Press will be devoted to reprinting classic books in the field of Americana, Western Americana and Exploration. The new division will differ from Martino Publishing in several important respects. Lone Wolf Press is intended to cater to customers who will actually read and collect the reprints. Unlike the Martino reference series, where books are consulted and not necessarily read, Lone Wolf Press will produce facsimile editions that can be read with comfort and can be collected as quality reprints in their own right. This means that all illustrations are expertly rescreened and retouched. All editions will be shot from newly created metallic plates. Only high quality grade natural paper will be used. All reprints will be smyth-sewn. Only linen cloth will be used for bindings, and all reprints will be limited to 500 copies or less. We hope this new series will be a welcome edition to the field of Western Americana and Americana. The first book in the series is Hebard's Sacajawea. Originally published by Arthur H. Clark in 1933, this has become a desirable and hard to find book on the second hand market. Our reprint has been shot from a copy of the original edition, and every effort has been made to retain the look of the original edition.

Cloth, Octavo.  xxii, 436 pages. 150 illustrations.  Oxford: Humphrey Milford, 1924.

The great value of this book, at least for the antiquarian bookseller or collector, is the attention given to the printed works associated with the history of aeronautics.  The work makes constant reference to the historical literature of aeronautics.  It is much more of a literary history of the subject than a technical one. There are hundreds of references to the mention of aeronautics in literature, science, belle-lettres, and the like.  Though not a bibliography, the work is full of bibliographical citations the antiquarian will find very useful. The period covered is from the earliest times to the latter half of the nineteenth century.  The work is adorned with 150 illustrations from contemporary sources, and contains a Chronology and a bibliography. Published by arrangement with Oxford University Press.

Holliman, Jennie. AMERICAN SPORTS (1785-1835). $60.00

Oversized Octavo. Durham, N.C.: Seeman Press, 1931. 222 p.

The purpose of this work was to show the lives of the American people during this early period, as revealed in their sports and recreation. An attempt is made to trace the origins of the American Sports, to discuss the principal ones pursued, and, finally, to show the reaction of the people. The author maintains that the American people played long before the organization of sports in America, and were not on the whole insistent about recreations. Sports were more something hoped for, something far in the future, rather than an actuality. The chapters cover Hunting, shooting practices, wild fowl shooting, the ring hunt, fox hunting, deer hunting, game laws, fishing, ball playing, quoits, nine pins, skittles and bowls, dollor pitching, long bullets, archery, swimming, skating, sleighing, horse racing, cockfighting, animal baiting, gander pulling, gouging and boxing, wrestling, walking, foot racing, boat racing as well as women's and children's sports. Also included a bibliography.

Holmes, Thomas James et al. INCREASE MATHER; A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS WORKS. $90.

Cloth. Oversized Octavo. Two volumes bound in one. Pp.xxxii.352 + 353-711. Cleveland, Ohio: Printed at Harvard University Press, 1931.

Increase Mather was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on 12 June 1639. He was ordained in 1664, and by the time of the Salem witchcraft trials was a prominent Boston minister. He had previously been the first President of Harvard College, and had headed a commission sent to England to negotiate for a new charter for the colony. It was unprecedented for a clergyman to perform such an important civil function, and he was widely praised for his efforts.
Increase was the father of Cotton Mather, who was also a minister. Both Mathers, however, developed doubts as to whether the witchcraft trials in Salem were achieving justice, and warned against the admission of spectral evidence. Much of the negative history surrounding the Mathers comes from Cotton's early writings on witchcraft which are widely seen as having inspired the initial diagnoses of witchcraft affliction in Salem.
Although Increase was one of the few ministers to associate sexual activity with witchcraft, he flatly rejected such tests for accused witches as reciting the Lord's Prayer, swimming, or weeping (superstition was the witches lacked these abilities). In 1684, he published An Essay for the Recording of Illustrious Providence, a lengthy defense of the existence of apparitions, witches, diabolical possessions and "other remarkable judgments upon noted sinners." In it he reasserted puritan views of witchcraft and also asserted his belief that the sins of the population had brought on the Indian wars, the unusual thunderstorms, and other judgments of God upon New England. He warned his readers of the dangers of Satan and urged them to change their sinful ways.
Holmes' bibliography of Increase Mather. In all 250 works are meticulously described. Very extensive annotations are also provided. Besterman 3733. Not to be confused with a short on the same subject done in 1930.

This invaluable reference includes about 83,000 entries and is an essential beginning for any discussion about German language printed books where the author is not cited. The work, published over a period of 26 years, is arranged alphabetically by title, with author’s name supplied for each and the authority for the information indicated. There is no work on the subject comparable to Holzmann-Bohatta. There is no other listing in Besterman that even comes close to the 83,000 entries cited therein.  Sheehy AA197. Besterman 404.

Horn, Walter & Schenkling, Sigmund. INDEX LITTERATURAE ENTOMOLOGICAE.  $225.

 Cloth. Octavo. 4 volumes bound in 2.  pp.[ii].352 + [ii].353-704 + [ii].705- 1056 + [ii].1057-1426.  Berlin 1928-1929

Throughout history the study of insects has intrigued great scientific minds. In the 4th century BC, the Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle provided descriptions of insect anatomy, establishing the groundwork for modern entomology.  The Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi published a major treatise, De Animalibus insectis . . . (“Of Insect Animals”) in 1602. Modern insect classification began in the 18th century. The French biologist René- Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur published the first of six volumes of Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire des insectes (“Memoirs Serving as a History of Insects”) in 1734. Carolus Linnaeus, in Systema Naturae (10th ed., 1758), applied his system of binomial nomenclature to organize the classification of insect species.  Entomology emerged as a distinct field of study in the early 19th century, with the publication of such works as the 8-volume British Entomology (1824–39), by John Curtis, and the founding of entomological societies in Paris and London. This scarce four-volume bibliography covers the early printed works on entomology from the beginning of printing through 1900.  It is a most difficult bibliography to find in the out of print market. In all over 25,000 printed items are described.  Besterman 2033.

From 1747 onward, he devoted most of his time to the acquisition of knowledge through traveling and observation and to the elaboration and publication of scientific and theological theories.
He published works on physics, physiology and anatomy. Some of his physiological writings were important. After his more scientific inquiries Swedenborg devoted his energies to the philosophy of religion. On the basis of his religious writings, the church of the New Jerusalem was founded in 1784. He rejected the traditional Christian teaching of the Trinity. Swedenborg defended his theological speculation by claiming it resulted from a divine call. He maintained that he had received a special light from God. Swedenborg was an extremely prolific writer. Hyde cites 3500 works in his bibliography, making this work the most comprehensive listing by far in Besterman. Hyde's bibliography is quite scarce. No copies appear on the internet, and it has not been previously reprinted. Besterman 5955. Published in conjunction with Todd Leif Pratum.
