Levi, Enrico Giorgio & Gelli, Jacopo. BIBLIOGRAFIA DEL DUELLO. $90.

Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp.iii-lii.571. Milano: Hoepli, 1903

Swordfighting as sport has existed since ancient Egypt, and has been practiced in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat was a popular sport in the European middle ages, modern FIE fencing owes more to unarmoured dueling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat.
By the mid-19th century, dueling was in decline as a means of settling disputes, partially because victory could lead to a jail term for assault or manslaughter. Emphasis shifted to defeating the opponent without necessarily killing him, and less fatal dueling forms evolved using the dueling sword, or epee de terrain, an unedged variant of the small sword. Later duels often ended with crippling thrusts to the arm or leg, and fewer legal difficulties for the participants. This is the basis of modern epee fencing.
Italian fencing is one of the principle schools in the discipline, the other being Spanish and French.
Bibliografia del Duello is the most comprehensive bibliography of dueling and fencing listed in Besterman, containing 5000 citations to printed sources. The title is very hard to find. To our knowledge it has not been reprinted. Besterman 1723.

Lones, Thomas East. ARISTOTLE'S RESEARCHES IN NATURAL SCIENCE. $60.00

Oversized octavo. Book viii, 274 p. illus., diagrs. London, West, Newman & Co.,  1912

The basis of Aristotle's method, as set out in his writings, was to ascertain facts by actual observation of natural phenomena. He preferred to rely on the evidences of the sense rather than attempt to obtain knowledge of phenomena by a process of abstract reasoning. He knew that the senses of sight and hearing, in particular, were less keen or reliable in some persons than in others, that sometimes the senses of touch and smell, and more rarely, those of sight, hearing and taste are not trustworthy, and he believed that Man was surpassed by many animals in keenness of his senses, excepting those of touch and taste. Without the aid of the senses, however, he did not think that anything could be learned or understood, and he held that errors were due to incorrect interpretations of the evidences of the senses which, as far as they were giving indication of their own proper objects of sensation, were reliable, e.g., the tongue would be reliable if used only as a organ of taste, and not as an organ of touch. His method, therefore, was very different from that of Plato, who denied that true knowledge could be based on observations by the senses. Lones' work is one of the few on this subject. Chapters include:

Aristotles Method; Celestial, Atmospheric and Terrestrial Phenomena; Phenomena of Light and Colour, Heat and Sound; Distinction between Animals, Plants and Inanimate Matter; On plants; and others..

Lumpkin, Wilson.  The Removal of the Cherokee Indians from Georgia.  $115.00

Octavo. Hardcover.  Two volumes bound into one. 700 pages. Wormsloe [Ga.] Priv. print.; New York, Dodd, Mead & company, 1907

Wilson Lumpkin was one of Georgia's most prominent political leaders of the antebellum period. After early service in local government and the state legislature, he was elected to Congress four times, serving 1815-17 and 1827-31; he resigned before serving his fourth term to run for the governorship of Georgia.
All of the public offices were important. In Lumpkin's eyes, however, his major accomplishment was his cardinal role in the removal of the Cherokee Indians from north Georgia.    Lumpkin's advocacy of removal was based on clear but harsh views of Indian-white relationships. First, based on his childhood and adult observations, he was convinced that Indians and whites could not peacefully coexist, for the whites would take advantage of the Indians. He was, however, no believer in innate white superiority, for he argued that the Cherokee, if removed to western territory and given time to develop, would acquire a cultural equality with whites and become a state, admitted to the Union on a par with other states. Thus, he advocated removal and, consistently with his states' rights views, the application of Georgia laws to the Cherokees in north Georgia. This application of Georgia laws included criminal laws, the distribution of Cherokee lands to white settlers by a lottery, and the imprisonment of northern missionaries who argued against removal. On two occasions, Lumpkin defied the U.S. Supreme Court on these matters.
Lumpkin's views on removal were opposed by a majority of the Cherokee (led by chief John Ross), by prominent federal legislators, and by various Christian missionary societies, but he had more powerful allies in U.S. presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, Georgia public opinion, and majority U.S. congressional sentiment. Thus, removal triumphed, leading to the Cherokee removals west, the best-known of which was the tragic Trail of Tears (1838-39).

The inclusion of serial off-prints gives a breadth to thelistings of each other which has yet to be approached by the offerings of on-line catalogues. The work has been compiled with the attention to detail and has taken several years to complete. For the first time the holdings of the Royal Astrological Society have been brought up to date and augmented for the student of the historical literature of astronomy.
