Born in 1866 Potter spent a solitary childhood enlivened by holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, which inspired her love of animals and stimulated her imaginative watercolor drawings. In 1900 she published privately The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In 1902 it was published commercially with great success by Frederick Warne & Company, which in the next 20 years brought out 22 additional books. Quinby’s bibliography has yet to be superceded, though several projects are in progress.  The original 1954 edition was done in only 250 copies and has become scarce. In all 90 works by Potter are meticulously described.  Quinby provides information on the published boards, full collation, and exhaustive treatment of illustrations and states of the various editions. Each entry goes on for several pages. A standard work.  Besterman 4991.
