of the standard bibliographies in the field. The area covered by the Spanish
Southwest 1542-1794 comprises New Spain, or Mexico. In practice, however, the
work also covers those parts of Texas which belonged to the provinces of Nuevo
Santander and Coahila, and those parts of Arizona which belonged to Senora.
Wagner describes 750 books in chronological order. Annotations are extremely
detailed, many going on for several pages. Jesuit relations are covered fully.
Extended narrative discussions of points of interest are provided. The work
is fully indexed.
Wagner, Henry Raup. Sir Francis Drake's Voyages Around The World; Its Aims And Achievements. $85.00
Octavo. x, 543 p. illus., ports., maps (part fold.) 28 cm. San Francisco, Calif., J. Howell, 1926
Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral, (c. 1540 – January 28, 1596) was an English privateer, navigator, naval pioneer and raider, politician and civil engineer of the Elizabethan era. He was the first captain to circumnavigate the Earth (Magellan died on his voyage, which was completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano). He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He died of dysentery while unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1596 .Wagner's work is arguably the most comprehensive assembly of texts and detailed analysis of Drake's voyage.
Wagner, Henry Raup. SPANISH EXPLORATIONS IN THE STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA. $75.
Cloth. Oversized Octavo. pp. v, 323, [1] p. 13 maps (part fold.) Santa Ana,
California: Fine Arts Press, 1933.
Though much is known of the English explorers, Cook and Vancouver, who explored
the Northwest Coast of the American, very little is known of the Spanish explorers
of the same period. This is because the Spanish were not interested in having
other nations known the results of their explorations.
Yet long before the fur traders appeared on the Northwest Coast, the Spaniards
had sailed by the entrance to the strait several times without seeing it, no
doubt because of the dense fog. The other problem was hard to see because of
its configuration.
Wagner's aim is to do justice to the Spanaird's who preceded Vancouver and who
left accounts of their experiences as vivid and entertaining as those of Vancouver
and Cook. Wagner's account is a study of this neglected portion of exploration
in U.S. history. The period covered is roughly from 1769 to 1793.
Contains 13 maps, several of them folding. Originally published in an edition
of 425 copies printed on white Strathmore Broadcaster text. Though once reprinted,
no copies are currently in print. Howes W10.

of individual medicines and drugs, all arranged chronologically from the 15th century onwards. The reader thus has presented to him a concise
literary history of each individual drug. Over 600 individual drugs are covered,

most important, have appended critical, historical or practical annotations,
thus adding greatly to the value of the work. Besterman 6124.

Wauchope, Robert. Modern Maya Houses: A Study of their Archaeological Significance. $75.00
Quarto. English. vii,181 p. illus., Washington, D.C., Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1938
Wauchope's study of modern Mayan houses made an important contribution to archaeology both in general and specific terms. Not only does he cover the filed of ancient and modern houses as to plan and construction, but he also covers their historical, ethnological and sociological aspects.
The implication of the research is two-fold. The integration of the life of the past population with that of the living exercises a humanizing influence on the extremities of modern archaeological technique, and a survey of village household life gives a more continuous picture of culture evolution in Middle American than the concentration of research on the essentially specialized ceremonial centers. It is also very important for an understanding of these monumental centers to know something of the nature of the population concentration and the extent of the social units affiliated to such centers.---quoted from G.C. Vaillant in a review of the book, 1938.
Wauters, A - J; Ad Buyl. Bibliographie Du Congo, 1880-1895. Catalogue Méthodique De 3,800 Ouvrages, Brochures, Notices Et Cartes Relatifs À Lhistoire, À La Géographie Et À La Colonisation Du Congo. $65.00
Octavo. xlix, 356 p. Bruxelles, Administration du Mouvement géographique, 1895
French Congo was the original French colony established in the present-day area of the Republic of the Congo, Gabon, and the Central African Republic. It began in 1880 as a protectorate, and its borders with Cabinda, Cameroons, and the Congo Free State were established by treaties over the next decade. The plan to develop the colony was to grant massive concessions to some thirty French companies. These were granted huge swaths of land on the promise they would be developed. This development was limited and amounted mostly to the extraction of ivory, rubber, and timber. These operations often involved great brutality and the near enslavement of the locals. Even with these measures most of the companies lost money. Only about ten earned profits. Many of the companies' vast holdings existed only on paper with virtually no presence on the ground in Africa. French Congo was temporarily divided between Gabon and Middle Congo in 1906, before being reunited as French Equatorial Africa in 1910 in an attempt to copy the relative success of French West Africa.
Wauters is the most comprehensive bibliography on the Congo, with some 3800 references.
